Changing Gears is a multifaceted collaboration between Melissa Henige and Andy Davis. There are many topics that will be covered in many forms.

Melissa and Andy will be riding their bikes from Bloomington, Indiana to the California Coast. Along the way, they will be documenting the people and communities they get to know, with special attention towards sustainability. The goal is to bring back to Bloomington examples of how individuals, businesses and governments are making changes across the country.

There are a variety of challenges facing Bloomington now or in the near future. Climate Change and Peak Oil lead a pack of problems, and Changing Gears will try and see how other communities are planning to address these issues.

From local food to alternative energy, Andy and Melissa will cover a wide breadth of topics. They will also examine some of the choices our country has made in the past that have created the atmosphere we now live in.

Changing Gears is planned to be a multi-dimensional effort, including a feature film, a television show, and a variety of podcasts and video blogs. In part, it is an experiment in the usage of new and old media, and how much a small team can do with the remarkable tools available today.

It is also an experiment in how a relationship will survive the stresses of cross-country travel along with an ambitious multimedia project. There is the additional question of how well two normal people with no background in long-distance biking can hold up over two and a half months of serious touring.
